Barriers and Facilitators of Implementing EBP©
Debra Jeffs, PhD, RN

LEARNING OBJECTIVE
The learner will be able to identify barriers and facilitators for evidence-based practice implementation.
                                        OVERVIEW
By now, you have learned so much about the process of evidence-based practice. You have embraced the idea that your practice decisions must be based on evidence and are excited to implement EBP in your practice setting. Now, what? It’s important to recognize the barriers to and facilitators of implementing EBP.

Nurses say that barriers to the implementation of EBP include:
  • Not enough time or resources
  • Misconceptions or lack of knowledge about EBP
  • Lack of access to research evidence
  • Lack of knowledge about searching the literature and appraising research
  • Lack of knowledge about statistical analyses
  • A unit-wide or institution-wide culture supporting the status quo
  • Information overload
  • Lack of administrative support or incentives to implement EBP
  • Lack of belief in EBP
How can you implement EBP on your unit or within your organization? Here are some facilitators for implementing EBP:
Have an inquiring mind – question current practices
      Educate yourself about EBP
Start small, such as a pilot of EBP implementation on one unit
Be a change champion- ignite change!
Work in a team to implement EBP
Focus on the benefits to patient outcomes as a result of EBP
Request time to find, review, and appraise the evidence
Request on-unit access to computerized databases,
such as the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

n      Find resource persons to assist, such as a reference librarian and a master’s or doctorally-prepared nurse who can serve as an EBP mentor

n      Integrate EBP with quality improvement initiatives on your unit. (See Lesson 11)

n      Educate other nurses through journal clubs, EBP grand rounds, and on-unit posters

n      Request travel monies to attend and present at workshops and conferences

n      Gain buy-in from stakeholders, e.g. administration, other professionals, and patients

n      Incorporate EBP into performance appraisals, clinical ladders, etc.

n      Encourage persistence in implementing EBP

n      Celebrate small and bigger successes!

Collaborating with others interested in EBP will help you to be successful in implementing EBP on your unit and within your institution. There is no turning back once you’ve been convinced that EBP is essential to professional nursing

practice!
